Rockwell City – Rachel L. Berg 88, formerly of Twin Lakes, passed away Saturday, December 30, 2023, at Paula J. Baber Hospice Home, Fort Dodge. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 4, 2024 at St. Paul’s Lutheran & Presbyterian Church, Rockwell City, with Pastor Denise Berns officiating. Burial will be at Rosehill Cemetery, Rockwell City. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, at the Laufersweiler’s Palmer & Swank Funeral Home, Rockwell City. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family. The Service will be live streamed on the Palmer & Swank Funeral Home Face Book Page.
Rachel is survived by her sons, Bryant (Joann) Berg of Twin Lakes, Monte (Rebecca) Berg of Ames, and Kole Berg of Olathe, KS; grandchildren, Owen Berg, Brittany (Marcelo) Fernandes, Brooke (Joseph) Kostecki, Blake Berg and Megan Berg; great-grandchildren, Mia and Leonardo Fernandes; brother George (Harriet) Zinnel of Rockwell City; sisters in law, Darleen Zinnel of Pomeroy, Jean Zinnel of Rockwell City, Judy Berg of Rockford, IL, and Shirley Berg of Rockwell City; brothers-in-law, Norman Larson of Badger and Tony Hardyk of Sioux City; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband H. Mervin Berg; parents, George and Helen (Sommerfeld) Zinnel; brothers, Marvin, Delmer, and John Zinnel; and sister Mardella Schultz.
Rachel L. Zinnel was born January 1, 1935 in Rockwell City. She graduated from Rockwell City High School, with the Class of 1952. On April 10, 1955, she was united in marriage to H. Mervin Berg at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Rockwell City. The couple farmed in the Piper area for most of their lives. Rachel and Mervin retired to Twin Lakes for many years and wintered in Florida. In 2018, they made their home at Sunnyview Independent Living in Rockwell City. Mervin passed away on July 9, 2018. Rachel was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran & Presbyterian Church, where she served on numerous committees and boards. Rachel loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly and enjoyed baking for them. She also treasured the times she had with family on vacations and at the lake.
