Phillip Schmit, 72, of Rockwell City passed away Thursday, November 20, 2025 at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Monday, November 24, 2025 at Laufersweiler's Palmer- Swank Funeral Home, Rockwell City. Burial will follow in Rosehill Cemetery. A visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Phillip Lee Schmit was born August 22, 1953 in Fort Dodge. He attended Catholic grade school and graduated from Rockwell City High School in 1972. On April 25, 1983, he was united in marriage to Patty Moberg and the couple made their home in Rockwell City and raised their three daughters. After high school he attended trade school and earned his CDL. He drove semi trucks and worked at Fiberbodies in Manson. He then moved to Colorado where he rediscovered his childhood passion in auto body that he learned working in his dad's shop and continued that work as he returned to Rockwell City in the early 80s. He owned and operated his own auto body shop for many years. Phil retired in 2021 and continued his passion for body work by working on hot rods with Nate Gentry in his shop.
Capturing memories with pictures and enjoying time with his family were very important to Phil. He also enjoyed DIY projects, woodworking, NASCAR, anything Alice Cooper, hunting, fishing, and reading books. He took every opportunity to watch Tik Tok with the volume on full blast and loved teasing and picking on everyone but especially his grandkids that were the joy of his life.
Phillip is survived by his wife, Patty Schmit of Rockwell City; children, Toni (Corey) Stout of Rockwell City, Christy Ross of Rockwell City, and Liz (Scott) Bruns of Lake City; grandchildren, Justin (Beth) Stout, Britnèe Crawford (Dean Noland), Kyra Bruns, Miley Stout, Dannika Heath, Briley Bruns, Linkoln, Skya, and Erika Ross; siblings, Mary Kay (Mike) Townsend of Iowa City, Tom Schmit of Jefferson, and John (Joleen) Schmit of Rockwell City; many nephews and a niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmet and Veronica (Kacmaryinski) Schmit; infant brother, Lawrence Schmit; brother, Michael J. Schmit, and nephew, Michael T. Schmit.
Memorials may be left to family discretion.
