Marvin Mortensen

Marvin Mortensen, of Sanford, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on October 18, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on May 6, 1938, in Callender, Iowa, Marvin was the son of the late Jens and Mona (Robertson) Mortensen. He graduated from high school and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in business from Buena Vista College in 1962.

Marvin began his career with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Washington, D.C., later transferring to Chicago, Illinois. He dedicated 38 years of service to the FDA before retiring in 2000.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Marjorie (Shaffer) Mortensen; two sons, David and Gary Mortensen; one daughter, Christine (Todd) Thomas - all of Sanford, NC; five grandchildren: Ashley (Justin) Schattscheider of Milwaukee, WI, Richard Mortensen (Rachael) of Elgin, IL, Erik (Sarah) Thomas of Sanford, NC, Kaylee Mortensen of DeKalb, IL, and Amy Thomas (David) of Sanford, NC; one great-grandson, Kaden Russell of Sanford, NC; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by his sister, Vivian Klingson.

Marvin was a man of many interests and talents. He found joy in riding his motorcycle, exploring new places, playing his guitar, and crafting in his woodshop. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on August 22, at Callender Cemetery in Callender, Iowa.
