Mabel Hammen

Mabel C. Hammen, 98, of Rockwell City passed away Monday, December 1, 2025 at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, December 9, 2025 at St. Francis Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Pomeroy. A visitation will be 4:30 to 7:30 PM Monday December 8, 2025 at Laufersweiler's Palmer-Swank Funeral Home, Rockwell City with a Rosary beginning at 4:30 PM.

Mabel Caroline Storm was born December 21, 1926 at home in Lake Creek Township near Rockwell City to George and Mabel (Stewart) Storm. She graduated Rockwell City High School in 1944. Upon graduation, she worked in the Superintendent's office at RCHS. Later she traveled to Chicago and worked for United Airlines. On November 19, 1949, Mabel was united in marriage to Hubert L. Hammen at St. Francis Catholic Church in Rockwell City.

Mabel and Hubert began their farming career in the Lake City area until they moved to a farm near Somers in 1957. In 1986, upon their retirement from farming, the couple moved to a farm near Jolley. Hubert passed away on December 25, 1986. Following his death, Mabel moved to Rockwell City where she lived until the time of her death.

Mabel and Hubert were blessed with four children who survive her; Jane Ellis of Largo, FL, Denny (Mary) Hammen of Farnhamville, Lori (Mike) Lopke of Boise, ID, and Larry Hammen also of Boise, ID. She was privileged to have 13 grandchildren; Tony (Marite') Ellis, Sarah (Nathan) Burton, Michelle (Joe) Mosier, Samantha (Heath) Telleen, Michaela (Shane) Carlson, Jeremy (Lauren) Hammen, Stephen (Mallory) Lopke, John (Mary) Lopke, Rachel (Colton) Machado, Hannah (Attila) Herrera, Molly (John) Stire, Therese (Thomas) Jones, and Patrick Lopke. 17 great-grandchildren followed; Camila and Benjamin Ellis, Quentin and Xavier Burton, Olivia, Luke, and Elliot Mosier, Caden and Maya Telleen, Makenna, Brinley, and Hadley Carlson, Carmen Hammen; George Lopke, Elijah Lopke, James Stire and Yvette Jones. Mabel is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Zierke of Coon Rapids; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hubert Hammen; granddaughter, Bridget Lopke; brothers, Elmer, Harry, and Hugh Storm and sisters, Ruth Boyd and Helen Heideman.

Mabel took great pride in being a homemaker and in traveling to various places in the United States. Her faith and family were her greatest joys.
