Larry Calvert

Jul 29, 1946 — Jul 29, 2026

Larry Ray Calvert, 80, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly in the early morning hours of July 29, 2026, on what was his 80th birthday. Instead of a planned celebration, the family is holding on to precious memories while being supported by faith, family and friends.

Larry was born in Fort Dodge to Jack Calvert and Norma (Joan Burnett) Calvert. He attended Fort Dodge Public Schools, graduating in 1965, before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Winona State University in 1969.

After college, Larry returned to Fort Dodge, where he taught physical education in the Fort Dodge public school system and coached the High School girls swim team. After five years in education, he began a career in the insurance industry with Trost, Moeller Insurance Company. In 1977, Larry purchased an ownership interest in the agency, which eventually became Calvert & Johnson Insurance. He remained dedicated to serving his clients and community throughout his career, and many joked they were never quite sure if he ever truly retired.

Larry believed in giving back to his community. He was actively involved withNoon Sertoma, the YMCA, and served on the Fort Dodge Recreation Commission Board for more than 20 years, helping improve recreational opportunities for generations of families.

While attending college in Winona, Larry met his bride Bonita "Bonnie" Ament, who was attending the College of St. Teresa. They were married in June of 1968 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and this year celebrated 58 years of marriage.

Larry and Bonnie were blessed with three children: Amy (Chad Scott) Baker, Crista (Ryan) Grant and Josh (Abby) Calvert.

He was a proud grandfather to Taylor (Brandon) Archibald, Josie (Cody) Chambers, Lauren (Travis) Graff, Morganne Grant, Reid Grant, Jackson Calvert, and Evan Calvert. Larry was also blessed with one great-granddaughter,Rylan Archibald, and eagerly anticipated the arrival of a great-grandson this November to Josie and Cody.

Above all, Larry treasured time with his family. Some of his happiest moments were spent at Lake Okoboji, especially when the entire family was together on the boat, creating memories that will be cherished for generations. He loved traveling, a good football tailgate or gathering around the card table, and simply enjoying the company of those he loved most.

A lifelong competitor and sports enthusiast, Larry enjoyed racquetball and volleyball in his younger years and later found great pleasure on the golf course. He proudly cheered for the Chicago Cubs,Chicago Bears, and Iowa State Cyclones, and could often be found relaxing with an occasional Miller Lite.

Larry is survived by the above-mentioned family members; his uncle, Jerry Burnett; sister-in-law Sandie Drew; brother-in-law Nick Ament; and many nieces, nephews, cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Sherri (McClure) Calvert; his nephew,Lucas Calvert; brothers-in-law, John Drew and Don Ament; Bonnie's parents,Don and Mary Ament; his aunts Betty Holmstrom and Marilyn Burnett; and uncle Dick Holmstrom and other beloved family members.
