Jim "Mahoney" Bocken

December 8, 1946 — July 3, 2025

Jim "Mahoney" Bocken, 78, of Fort Dodge, passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at Trinity Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his family.

Mahoney was born on December 8, 1946, in Cherokee, Iowa, to loving parents Don and Monica "Ducky" Bocken. The family of five later moved to Fort Dodge, where Mahoney graduated from St. Edmond High School in 1965. He went on to attend the University of Northern Colorado.

In 1968, Mahoney married his high school sweetheart, Kathy Ackerman. Just days after the birth of their first son, Greg, Mahoney was drafted into the U.S. Army and stationed in Texas. A year later, Kathy joined him. Mahoney served from 1969 to 1971. After his service, the family returned to Fort Dodge to be near loved ones and welcomed their second son, Brian, and later their daughter, Sarah.

Mahoney joined his in-laws in the family business, where he worked hard and enjoyed the challenge. He was a proud supporter of St. Edmond Catholic Schools and was very involved in the community.

Above all, Mahoney loved spending time with his family. Holidays were especially memorable, filled with laughter and stories shared between him and his siblings, Bob and Maryann, for all to enjoy. When grandchildren came into his life, they became his greatest joy. He rarely missed a local game and traveled often to attend their events in Des Moines and Kansas City.

Mahoney was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Ducky Bocken; his sister, Maryann (Bocken) Bitner; and his granddaughter, Sydney Katherine Bocken.

Mahoney is survived by his wife, Kathy, and his children: Greg (Amy) Bocken of Fort Dodge, Brian (Susie) Bocken of Des Moines, and Sarah (David) Duethman of Kansas City; his brother, Bob Bocken; his grandchildren, Matthew (Julia) Bocken, Patrick Bocken, Connor Bocken, Sam Bocken, Max Bocken, Ben Bocken, Charlie Duethman and Abbie Duethman; his great-grandchild, Graham Bocken; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to St. Edmond Catholic Schools, The Association of Frontotemporal Degeneration, or to the discretion of the family.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, July 10, 2025 at Holy Trinity Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, July 11, 2025 at Holy Trinity Church with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating. Burial will follow at Corpus Christi Cemetery.
