He moved to Gowrie with his family in 1958 when his father opened Lee Benson Chevrolet. After graduating from Prairie Community High School in 1971 he attended General Motors Technical Institute in Omaha, Nebraska, and began working in the Parts and Service Department of the dealership. He married Linda Ann Rocholl on July 27, 1974 in Anoka, Minnesota and they made their home in Gowrie. After his fathers retirement, Greg became the owner and manager of Lee Benson Motors, Gowrie. He later worked for Macke Motors Gowrie and Champion Collision Center in Rockwell City. In 2018 Greg opened Beek Street Antiques & Collectibles in downtown Gowrie. Greg joined the Gowrie Fire Department in 1973. He served as a Captain, Assistant Chief and twelve years as Chief of the department. Training was a priority of his leadership and he found great satisfaction in the level of achievement, dedication and teamwork of the fine men with whom he was privileged to serve. He championed the fundraising and building of the new fire station before he retired in January of 2021. As a young boy Greg chose to follow Jesus, and committed himself to ministry in his church. He faithfully served in the sound booth at First Covenant Church in Fort Dodge. Greg loved to fish, especially on Island Lake in Park Rapids, Minnesota. He restored boats and cars and his own 1929 Chevrolet with Central Fire Apparatus truck. Greg is survived by his wife Linda Benson of Gowrie; sister Judy (Carter) McDaniel of Memphis, Tennessee; beloved cousins, adored nieces and nephews, and close friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leland and Donna Benson, and brother, Marlin Benson, all of Gowrie. The family prefers memorials to the Gowrie Fire Department, Southwest Webster Ambulance, or First Covenant Church, Fort Dodge.
