Gary Askeland

Gary Askeland, 79, of Norman, Oklahoma and formerly of Fort Dodge passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2026.

A graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at Colfax Township Cemetery, Vincent. Military rites will be presented by the United States Army Honor Guard and VFW Post 1856. Laufersweiler Funeral Home is serving the family.

Gary is survived by his son Brad (Jessie) Askeland and their children Tinley, Blakely, and Landry of Altoona, daughter Dawn Schmidt-Askeland and her children Parker, Hudson, and Griffin Schmidt all of Syracuse, New York. He is also survived by a brother-in-law Daniel Allen of Fort Dodge and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Elverna Askeland and sister Kathey Allen.

Gary Elmer Askeland was born April 20, 1947, in Fort Dodge. He attended school and after graduating he enlisted in the United States Army. He served during Vietnam. After his honorable discharge, Gary began his career with Hormel's. He worked at the Fort Dodge location before being transferred to Ottumwa for six years and then lastly, he retired from the Norman, Oklahoma location. Gary enjoyed being outdoors, especially hunting or fishing.
