Duane Lester Bill, affectionately known to all as "Bud," passed away peacefully in his home on March 3, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 85 years old.
Born on June 7, 1940 at Charles City Memorial Hospital, Bud's story began on the family farm. In 1951, at the age of eleven, he moved with his then 5 brothers and sisters into Charles City, Iowa where his family grew by 2. It was later, while in Des Moines that he met the love of his life, Patricia Leeper. They were united in marriage on January 9, 1962, beginning a devoted partnership of over 60 years.
Bud and Patricia eventually moved to Fort Dodge where they raised their family. Bud was a man of steadfast loyalties who lived for three things: his family, his job, and fishing. For 40 years, Bud was a pillar of the Hy-Vee company, concluding his career as the Frozen Food Manager. He was a neighborhood fixture, famously known for handing out popsicles to all the "littles" who came through his aisle while shopping with their parents. To Bud Hy-Vee wasn't just a job; it was a community.
When he wasn't at the store, he could usually be found near the water. When asked about his favorite fishing spots, Bud's answer was simple: anywhere he might catch a fish. He faced his illness with the same grit and quiet strength he carried throughout his life. His resilience allowed him to witness some of his greatest joys in his final years: seeing his grandchildren get married and welcoming his first great-granddaughter.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Edith (Chambers) Bill, and his beloved wife, Patricia Bill.
He leaves behind five grieving children: David Bill; Mike (Lisa) Bill; Rob (Donna) Bill, Tricia (Greg) Dohrn and Eric (Rachel) Bill. His legacy continues through his beloved grandchildren: Aaron, Galatea, Dartangan "Tanner" and his wife, Eriana, Alexander "AJ", Jon, Kayli, Mike Junior, and Lilith; and his great-granddaughter, Vivian Joan.
Bud is also survived by his seven brothers and sisters: Jerry (Kathy); Raymond (Betty) ; Marilyn (Rich) ; Barb; Roger (Connie); Diana (Dave); Dolly (Doug); as well as several nieces and nephews, all of whom will forever cherish his memory. True to his nature, Bud did not want a traditional funeral or "sad, crying eyes." In accordance with his wishes, his family will hold a Celebration of Life at a later date, when everyone can gather together to share stories, smiles, and celebrate a life well-lived.
Memorials may be left to family discretion.
