Doris Schmidt, 81, of Fort Dodge, passed away Saturday January 17, 2026, at her home surrounded by her family.
Private family services are planned for a later date.
Doris Mae Schmidt was born on June 23, 1944, in Algona. She grew up on a farm in LuVerne, IA and graduated from LuVerne High School in 1962. During her high school years she was an avid basketball player. After school she moved to Fort Dodge, where she married Kenneth Schmidt and the couple established their home together. To this union were 3 children, Steve, Chris, and Kelly. Doris worked as an administrative secretary at Iowa Central Community College in the nursing department until she stayed home with her children. After Ken passed in 1984, she went back to work with Ann Smeltzer as her personal assistant, and then went on to work at several garden centers around town. Doris was a talented seamstress, sewing over 100 quilts and wall hangings. She also enjoyed gardening, playing cards, and drinking coffee with her friends. Doris was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Doris is survived by her sons, Steve (Deb) Schmidt of Fort Dodge, Chris Schmidt of Linwood, KS, daughter, Kelly (Shawn) McClain of Boone, 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, siblings, Betty Vorrie of Fort Dodge, and Jim Byson of Barnum.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, parents, Margaret E. Schmidt, Fred C. Byson and siblings, John Byson, Ethel Helmers, and Louis Byson.
Doris always said her greatest assets were her three children and family, and to remember to always be kind.
Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
