Alan "Butch" Markert, 86, of Manson passed away Monday, October 30, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Monday, November 6, 2023 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Manson. A burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery in Manson. A visitation will be 3:00 to 6:00 PM Sunday at the church with a Rosary starting at 2:30 PM.
Alan will be remembered by his wife Carrie of Manson, children Steve and Chris (Bradley) of Clare, Sr. Regina of Beaverton OR, Doug and Deb (Peterson) of Polk City, Connie and Matt (Peters) of Manson and Danna and Brett (Snell) of Manson, 19 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and sister Bonnie Gates who is 94 and lives in Humboldt.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1986 at the age of 91, his mother in 2013 at the age of 106 and his brother John "Jack" in 2016 at the age of 81.
Butch was born January 15, 1937 in Fort Dodge to Emma Martha (Strutzenberg) and John Gottlieb Markert. He attended six different schools growing up, graduating from Palmer High School in 1956. Butch married Caroline Ann Lenz "Carrie" from Pomeroy, Iowa on June 17, 1961. He worked at Manson Coop from 1965 until 1992. After which he farmed until his death.
He was an avid supporter of Manson athletics and who loved watching his kids, grandkids and great grands play sports. He ran the football and basketball clock for over 15 years. He was the president of the Manson Development Corporation. Butch had a strong faith and attended daily Mass and was a member of the Men's Club and the Knights of Columbus at St. Thomas Catholic Church. He was a volunteer on the fire dept for over a decade. Butch was an avid fisherman who frequented many lakes in the area, Minnesota and Canada. Butch enjoyed "driving" vacations with Carrie and his kids. He loved attending and hosting family events and dinners. He loved farming with his son. His family and friends will forever remember his overall happiness and goodness.
