Eugene Yetmar

Eugene G. Yetmar, 95, of Fort Dodge passed away Saturday, July 10, 2021 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Thursday, July 15, 2021 at Holy Trinity Church with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating. Burial will follow in Corpus Christi Cemetery with military rites provided by the United States Army Honor Guard and the VFW Post 1856. A visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 PM Wednesday at Laufersweiler Funeral Home. Gene is survived by his children, Deb Yetmar of Fort Dodge and her children, Amanda (Royal) McNeese and their children, Nolan and Harley, Morgan (Scott) Halbur, Jordon (Kyndra Chambers) Ruter, and Ben Ruter; Kevin Yetmar of Fort Dodge and his children, Aaron (Brenda) Yetmar and their daughter, Cecilia, Aubriegh Yetmar (Landon Schuttler) , Zachary Yetmar (JD Schneider), Nathan Yetmar (Sydnee Wrage); Brenda (Dave) Swank of Rockwell City and their children, Josh (Christine) Axness, Chelsea (Teddy) Maier and their children, Harper, Wesley and a baby girl on the way; Justin Axness, Abby (Colin) Eagan, Marci (Chris) Bowden and Sadie (Scott) Drees; Keith (Pam) Yetmar of Fort Dodge and their children, Nick (Jen) Yetmar and their daughter, Adalynn, Kyle (Kelsey) Yetmar and their children, Jack, David, heavenly angel, Thomas and a baby girl on the way, Ethan Yetmar (Brittney Nixon); Kurt (Melinda) Yetmar of Olathe, KS and their children, Woody Yetmar, Bailey Yetmar, and Monty Yetmar; Wendy (Brad) Clark of Cedar Falls and their daughters, Olivia Clark and Emma Clark; and Rick Yetmar of Fort Dodge and his sons, Chase Yetmar and Carter Yetmar. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Margaret (Schuster) Yetmar, his wife, Marcella Yetmar in 2002; great-grandson, Thomas Yetmar; and siblings, Margaret Arndt, Melvin Yetmar, Don Yetmar and Marian Zierke. Eugene Galvin Yetmar was born May 31, 1926 in Clare. In August of 1944, Gene joined the United States Army and became an Infantryman. He was assigned to guard Prisoners of War at Camp Algona alongside his brother Melvin. Eugene and Melvin were the only 2 brothers ever assigned as guards at Camp Algona where they oversaw 10,000 prisoners from 1944 to 1946. Upon his honorable discharge, Gene returned to Fort Dodge. On June 22, 1957 he was united in marriage to Marcella Rolling at St. John's Catholic Church in Bancroft. The couple established their home in Fort Dodge. Gene was a welder at Bush Hog and also worked for New Idea and Central Labs. He also owned several rental properties in Fort Dodge. Gene and Marcella enjoyed going to the VFW and could always be found playing a game of pitch. He was a proud New York Yankees fan and a devoted Democrat. He was chosen for the Honor Guard Flight and was able to visit the monuments in Washington D.C. Gene was extremely proud that he was the Veteran of the Year recipient for 2020. He enjoyed summer vacations in Okoboji and could always be found in the stands at his children and grandchildren's ball games. He was a longtime member of the local VFW and the Bohemian Hall. He enjoyed attending family reunions, visiting his wife at the cemetery and spending time with family and friends. The family would like to extend great thanks to Unity Point Hospice for all of their help taking care of dad. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
