Bertha Grell

Bertha M. Grell, 80, of Fort Dodge passed away Saturday, November 12, 2016, at her home. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating. Burial will follow at North Lawn Cemetery. A visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Bertha is survived by her son, Ben (Leilani) Grell of Fort Dodge; brothers Thomas (Dee) Newkirk of Lehigh; John (Ursula) Newkirk of Fort Dodge; Ben (Judy) Newkirk of California; sister Virginia (Victor) Carlson of Fort Dodge; sisters in law Sharon Grell; Eileen Newkirk; Judy Newkirk; Mary Grell; Lois Newkirk; Carol Grell; granddaughter Keely Grell; grandson Ace Grell; great grandchildren Kayd and Kash Moore; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Don; parents Pearly and Caroline Newkirk; her infant daughter; and brothers Mervin and Clarence. Bertha Mae Newkirk was born on February 7, 1936, in Otho, IA. She was united in marriage to Don Grell on June 15, 1962 in Webster City. The couple made their home in Fort Dodge. Don later passed away May 12, 2001. She was employed for 40 years at Patterson Field, 20 years at Friendship Haven, and 5 years at Fort Dodge Community Schools. She enjoyed working at the ball field, time spent with her family, cooking for her family, and collecting bells.
